Caves - In Ægissida
there are ancient caves, believed by many to have been dug by
Irish monks before the arrival of the Nordic settlers in Iceland.
Fishing - In
the land of Ægissida
is one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the country,
river Ytri-Rangá. It is also possible to go trout
fishing in the nearby rivers.
Golf – There
is a 18 hole golf course 8 km away.
Saga - In
a short distance is the setting for the famous saga
Njála
and the Njála museum is in the village of
Hvolsvöllur. Skógar Museum,
which is the local museum for the counties of Rangárvallasýsla
and West Skaftafellssýsla, is 60 km away from
Hella.
Horse riding – Several
riding tour operations are in the neighbourhood.
Hiking/biking – The
area is perfect for hiking and biking. The incredibly
beautiful Mount Hekla is only 40 km away from Ægissida.
Day tours – It
is ideal to go by car or bus to Gullfoss, Geysir,
Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk.
The waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are
less than an hour away and it is also possible to fly
to the Westman Islands.
Hella - It
takes 5 minutes to walk to the village of Hella,
where it is possible to find amongst other things
a bakery, a supermarket, restaurants, a bank and
a swimming pool. Ægissdia/Hella
is 94 km from Reykjavik.
